This experienced dog lover says that the best way to avoid tragedy is to dog proof your house.
There's a rule at our house that nothing is to be taken off even the lowest piece of furniture in the house. While I wouldn't trust them with food on the coffee table, nonfood items are generally off limits if they are there.
If it falls on the floor, the dogs aren't in trouble for eating it. If it falls on the floor and is destroyed, the human takes responsibility for it.
So we scan the environment for chewable items as if we had a two year old. Prevention is the best training in this case. Although I have seen people who have trained their dogs not to take anything without express approval. I'm impressed, but make no real effort to achieve this goal. :)
They generally do outgrow it. Usually. Though antifreeze will always smell like a tasty treat.
