I had a pdoc like that. :(
My underlying predispositions are no different, and I still face many of the same challenges. But as needed medications seem to be the right choice for me. I take lamictal for migraine prophylaxis, but it doubles as a mood stabilizer. And I have anti anxiety meds to take as needed. I rarely use my klonopin, but risperdal when I start to be anxious or agitated is very helpful. I've gotten pretty good at judging what I need. Therapy also helps keep me on even enough keel.
That being said, I still fall apart under stress. I just understand my reactions better, and am better able to use medications and therapy to keep the lows from sinking quite as low - or maybe it's more that they don't last as long.
I was feeling discouraged a few months ago because I'd had collapsed in hysterics. My therapist reassuringly reminded me that I collapse in hysterics very infreqently now. :)
Except for a couple of hormonal induced major depression, my depression seems very much tied to anxiety, so managing the anxiety helps me manage the depression.
It worked for me, but of course everyone is different. You mentioned a pdoc a few times, but do you have a good therapist? Even if conditions are biologically based, as I know mine are to a large degree, therapy can help a lot in management.
