> Thanks! Tonight was actually the first time I took the SJW. I took 900mg, which is what seemed to be the norm from what I've read. I've been feeling a little sick to my stomach though, which I read was a possibility, so maybe I should have taken a lower dosage to see how I reacted to it first. How much do you take?
~ ~ ~ Hi TC - My caps are 300 mg SJW Extract - aerial parts (leaves I guess! LOL) standardized to contain 0.3% hypericin (900mcg/capsule) It says take 1 cap 3x per day. That's what I do.
In my "Natural Health Bible" it says some people take 500 mg twice/day or 600 mg in the morning & 300mg in the evening. It says if it bothers your stomach, to take it with food. If you want any more info from that book, let me know & I'll post it on the Alternative board. It does say to be careful if going from regular SSRI's to SJW. Let me knkow if you need more info about that TC, as you have to be careful in that case, not to raise seratonin too much.
I have a SJW & a 5HTP beside my bed with a glass of juice or water. I take them if I wake up around 5 or 6, then go back to sleep. The other one I take is 5HTP. I'll say more about that at the end.~ ~
> The Valerian gives me an odd reaction, I suddenly get motivated to organize things!~ ~ ~ WOW - I should take it!!!! That would be a wonderful side effect. Wow - listen to this - I just looked it up in the same book:
"Except for the unpleasant odor, valerian generally causes no side effects. A few people experience mild gastrointestinal distress, andthere have been rare reports of people developoing a paradoxical mild stimulant effect from valerian" ! ! So maybe you're rare! ~ ~> I can't tell if its acting like a stimulant or not - its not really quite like that, but I've had the same reaction both times I've taken it. I've suddenly found myself organizing and tidying up things when I'm supposed to be getting ready for bed! Isn't that odd?
~ ~ Maybe you could take it early in the day & have that happen NOT before bed.~ ~> I'll probably post this on meds or alternative tomorrow and see if anybody else has had this reaction.
~ ~ ~ It certainly seems like it's related to the valerian & from what's in my book, it's not unheard of. NICE side effect!! ~ ~
> I hope you have a good night! Thanks for the support!

> P.S. What was that other one you mentioned? Is it for anxiety or depression?~ ~ It's 5HTP. Our bodies use 5HTP to make serotonin. In my book, it talks of a study in which 5HTP or Fluvoxamine (an AD in the Prozac family) for 6 weeks. 5HTP worked a little better at reducing depressed mood, anxiety, physical symptoms & insomnia. It caused fewer & less severe side effect - the only complaint being occasional mild digestive distress. Dosage - 100 to 200mg 3x daily. Dosage on my bottle (100 mg) is 1 tab 1 - 2x daily. I take 2 - 3. If you decide to try it, make sure it says "No Peak X" on the bottle. It's some contaminant that had been found in tryptophan & some 5HTP.
So I'm feeling a little less anxious today. I'm not sure if it's due to going back to my pills 3x/day. I'd been forgetting the during-the-day ones.
It's been very cold here today & I've felt like 'cacooning'. Seems like whenever I forget to take fairly large doses of Vit C, whatever 'bug' I have starts manifesting itself again! Sigh.
I send you hugs TC :-) Kath
SJW can take a while to get up to max.
