Dear PC,
I hope my response above didn't insult you or make you think I'm not being supportive.
My DH's Dad had Alzheimer's. We helped provide the support that allowed him to stay at home as long as safe & possible.
It was very traumatic moving him to a nursing home. I went with him the day he went there. I felt awfully mean because we sort of did it in I guess an underhanded way, but it was suggested by our family counsellor at the Alzheimer's Day Care Centre (I always find that insulting, since they're adults & I think of DayCare as for kids) that he went to during the days. She helped us with planning etc.
It is a very sad disease.
I remember at Dad's daughter's funeral, at the visitation, I was sitting at the edge of the room with him. People were walking by us. His Grandson's wife walked by & he said, very distinctly: "FAT" - it was true; I was mortified. I don't think anyone heard.
One time I was in the doctor's waiting room with Dad & he started telling me loudly about a lady he saw at the grocery store....something like, "She must have been 300 pounds!!!!!"
It can certainly be very very embarrassing, the things that they blurt out.
He had other stories that he'd repeat & one in particular about his doctor, that if he started it in public, I'd try like heck to shut him up/change the subject....but THAT was not possible! He'd just carry on with it.
Sorry you're going through this PC. It's awful.
love, Kath
