My therapist is for the most part a therapist who works with the present. Since I'm doing long term (very long term) therapy with him, we have the opportunity to explore present day problems in terms of my historical patterns, and to some extent how they came to be.
Lots of people find that they don't need to do that in order to improve. I'm one of those people who seems to need to understand the whys of what I do before I can change them. But not everyone needs that.
I can assure you that my relationship with my therapist was neither loving nor caring for quite some time. Any relationship we have now was built up with lots of work, and no, that's not necessarily representative of therapy at all. Or even of therapy with him.
Even therapists who do work with attachment issues and form a relationship with clients will often do more practical things at first.
