But Raleigh/Durham is one of the areas that my hubby was looking at for work, and it looked like a place we could settle in, from what little research we really did. Nashville is also said to be very nice.
My biggest concern, of course, was moving to what is basically The South -- culture shock, for me, you know. The only experience I've had with people from The South is with my father's family. They're Deep South in Alabama, and in a very small town -- the paved roads end before you get to where they live, for example. Over lunch with several of his relatives, after his death, one of his cousins said to his wife, about me: "Will you look at that? It don't slow her down at all, having to eat with that left hand of hers." I had a hard time with that, for a number of reasons -- mostly just that I grew up with a rule that said one NEVER says anything to draw attention to a guest's table manners. But, again, that was backwoods style southern. I don't have any experience with City southern.
Anyway, sorry for the tangent -- NC was more of a pull for me than some of the other places hubby was looking at, and my mother went to UNC and seems to have liked it well enough. And there's certainly a lot of stuff going on around there. I would think it might be a very invigorating environment.
Good luck, Dinah, whether you stay where you are or move on.
