I've been a green card-carrying Canadian since 1983 (yup, I'm old), and the only times I've considered pursuing US citizenship has when I've been very afraid for my own security. I decided long ago that citizenship pursued because of my fears was not something I was comfortable with. So, I gather up the red tape, wind it around me, and trudge on through.
My aunt, who died several years ago, had been one of the countless displaced persons after WWII. She'd been passed from one European DP camp to another, and finally settled in England. She always told me that she was a "citizen of the world", and I'd like to think of myself that way. So I accept the wearing of my red tape like a sash signifying my acceptance of living as a foreigner in this country. I don't feel that changing my citizenship would make me safer or more secure.
Wow. Didn't know I'd be going down this path tonight, it must be delirium at seeing our baseball team actually win a game.
