i'm not sure where you are now, but if it's anything like where i'm from, the midwest was a big culture shock.
i don't know what you're trained to do, so i can't speak for jobs but i once had a job interview in MO for a chemist position. didn't get an offer, but i guess it proves there *are* skilled jobs out there.
the one thing i'll say about the midwest is that the cost of living is way low. so that's helpful. but unless you're in a metropolis like KC or something, you NEED a car.
the state residency thing varies by state. and really, you can get finaid regardless of residency status, depending on the school, but tuition might be higher so the finaid might not go as far until you get that residency. stafford loans are a beautiful thing. :)
anyhow, good luck moving. hopefully you won't be too far away from a "real" city ;)
