There was a similar story making the rounds a while back, only the guy actually got taken even though he was a computer security guy who was trying to trace the scammer. Gotta be careful, since even the best of us can still be tricked.
In fact, there is a famous story about a guy in San Francisco a number of decades ago. He'd contact the attorney in a local lawsuit, and claim to have access to certain documents that would clinch the case. Usually say that he worked in a printing company, saw these things, they were so outrageous that he really felt he had to do something about it, but he'd need to buy the paper to copy them onto, which would cost...
The local legal community felt rather honored when he hit them. And whoever he was did a ton of research, because he always knew a lot of the hidden details of the cases involved.
I wonder if anyone ever found out who he was? This was way back -- 50s or 60s?
