Trapped miners in West Virginia

Posted by Sarah T. on January 3, 2006, at 20:43:59

After reading about the tragic accident in the mine in West Virginia, I wonder why robots aren't used to do the mining. It is such a dangerous job. If robots can be used to perform surgery on humans, including surgery at a distance, and if robots can be used for deep sea and outer space exploration, why can't robots be used for most of the mining? I understand that one of the main problems in the mines is the risk of explosions caused by a spark from just about any source that ignites the gases. There must be a way to minimize this risk.
