Cornfields are abundant in the United States; they're a cheap, common backdrop .. common as in, there's cornfields near just about everybody, isn't there????
They certainly are becoming ubiquitous here. Corn 'n potatoes. Corn 'n potatoes.
So, what cheaper more common set could you use? I'd go for the cornfield too, if I wrote Sci-fi. Crop circles and all that.
