It's crazy the difference having heard French on a regular basis can make. At the French immersion I attended this summer, there were some students who were more technically proficient than I was, but all the animators had me pegged as the sole Québec native among the students within the first week. The majority of the other students had an accent which I found kind of disorienting in a way I find hard to pinpoint. The result was a completely different sound than would be heard from a local student of the same language level.
Then again, my own accent turned out by the end to be a pretty odd mix of anglophone and some Québecois, which amused the animators to no end. At the banquet where the prohibition on speaking English was lifted, everyone then proceeded to tell me how strange I sounded in English. So now not only do I feel like an absolute poser speaking in French, I feel awkward speaking my own mother tongue. Maybe I ought to carry a whiteboard and marker around and stick to that. ;-)
