The same thing happens to me, only my dog JUST WON'T QUIT, he climbs into my lap and relentlessly licks my face, and if the crying gets bad he starts shivering and whining. At first I thought I was imagining a connection, desperate for comfort, but I've noticed if a friend of mine that he too loves very much is sad when they stop by he sits directly in front of them and tilts his head from side to side or licks their face. My dog is almost -too- human at times.

If it were common and everyone owned an animal like this there probably wouldn't be so much lonlieness in the world.
