>I couldn't agree with you more. I've tried having each one of my kids consider health care for their futures, not that they listen. I worked as a pharmacy technician for two great years after I quit school in the early '70s. The hospital was teeming with young people avoiding Vietnam and otherwise finding their way in life. I loved what you talked about, the fact that it is a self-contained world where people are born and die, get sick and heal, where staff care for patients and for each other. I learned some responsibility (when I wasn't pocketing an occasional Dexedrine), I made lifelong friends, I made some cash to get my first apartment and my first used car (VW Bug), we had softball and vollyball teams, and I learned to be helpful like when I helped student nurses with their anatomy homework. A lot of my work with elderly clients involves getting them into care and helping them return home. It's no coincidence that I met my wife in a hospital where she was a discharge planner. Anyway, I know how you feel about that work - how much kindness an ill person is given goes a long way in determining their recovery.
