I think that maybe being thin skinned is what makes that 'mind-reading' come naturally. Trauma especially, when you had to be super aware of negative vibes...
I guess some people learn how to do this by making a conscious effort (clinician's for example). It still seems a bit different though, and there are still some things they don't seem to get. I noticed this when I did DBT group - we were all in synch in the sense that we could understand the others responses whereas the skills trainers seemed awfully puzzled at times.
I guess I think maybe it is a mixed blessing.
I can usually tell when someone is unsure / hurt or something and hanging back. I am one of those people who go around to try and help such people feel better. Maybe because I have been there so many times myself. I can't bear to see others in pain. But a mixed blessing. Out of the trauma comes a special sensitivity. It can be used for good, or harm (e.g., when you take others responses really personally and cut or whatever over it).
But all things considered I suppose it is a gift.
It is the only good I can see out of so many horrible events.
