If I <chuckle> can be bold enough to answer in my "folksy" way.
I see the same thing every day at work. Where I am (software - R&D - geophysics) he have a group of very brilliant scientists, known in their field, Phds - the works.
We also have (me included) a very bright group of software writers with (mere) bachelors degrees.
Quite often (thankfully for my bank account) a problem will present itself with the current software. The great hightly educated minds will work together, scribble equations all over the walls, trying to determine if the software is buggy, or if the data input is bad, convinced that the approach is correct because - well, just because.
Sometimes, after all that is said and done, one of us will ask a basic question - and it will turn out the solution was out there all along.
Meanwhile my paycheck cashed....
