Computer e-mail question

Does anyone know why, when I send out an e-mail with a graphic in it, that the receivers get only a blank picture. I'll get jokes and things with pictures in them and I try to forward them but the people I send them to complain that they're getting blank messages. Actually, I think they get that little box that indicates that a graphic was there originally.
Does this have something to do with my browser privacy settings and/or is it their settings that are the problem? When I open my sent message it doesn't show the graphic either - just that little box again. It's so frustrating!
