Every day, health care workers are exposed to many many sick people. Expect to see more precautions like that.
Hospital workers are themselves walking incubators who carry diseases from one patient to another. Anti-infection measures are very important in a hospital environment. It could have been to protect you from exposure to him, while you were wet, and most vulnerable to aerosol vectored infection.
Your husband has probably been exposed to you already, eh? ;-)
