Such a big step!! But I found a whole community to embrace when my guys went so it was easier. I also went in and read to the kids one day a week so I could get to know them. It was one of the most satisfying volunteer experiences I ever had. I let my sons help me pick the books so it was special from the home front too.

Treat yourself to something special that day. It does feel like a step away from you and that is hard. We wonder if they will still need us as much (they do, more) and now what do we do with our "free" time (you won't have any).

One of the things that helps if you don't already have a system is to try to ask questions about his day that leads him to tell you what they did, who he played with, what he ate, etc. For kids who have morning kindergarten and after school care, they can't remember the mornings very well. This is especially important to help them process upset, hurt feelings etc. Kids store away things to share with parents but then for get to share. And THEN act like you were supposed to know anyway! Mother's DO need to be mind readers.

Take care of yourself. I'm sure he will love it.
