My week with my little guy (long and rambling)

Posted by All Done on July 26, 2004, at 2:07:32

Okay. So, I've been home with my son for approximately three weeks and I have yet to post a Mommy story. Now, I'm sure there are those of you waiting on the edge of your seats for one ;), so here it goes. Proceed to be inundated.

The last week was so much fun for us. We saw Laurie Berkner ("Victor Vito") at a book signing where she sang (it was a small place and only a handful of children were there). My son, N, and his cousin really enjoyed it. Then, we saw her in concert at an outdoor venue the next day. It rained a bit, but it was still a blast.

We went to a children's farm where N went on pony rides, a train, a carousel, saw baby piglets, and lots of other cute animals.

We went swimming. All he wants to do is jump off of the steps into my arms and go underwater.

We went out for ice cream with his aunts and cousins.

We drove to Michigan for the day to see a friend that just moved there and is terribly sad and feeling lonely. We brought her daughter and N to a children's museum.

And finally, on Friday - our day of “rest” - I locked myself out of the house...with N locked inside! Here's what happened:

We were just being lazy that morning, both still in our pajamas. I noticed N needed a diaper change and I remembered I left the wipes in the car from our road trip the day before. I went out the door to the garage and the minute I closed it behind me, I realized it was locked. Oh, the words that went through my head! I went around the house to see if there were any open windows or unlocked doors, but I pretty much already knew the answer to that question. N was still in the living room sitting on the couch when I went to the neighbor's house (in my pajamas) and used their phone to call a locksmith. They said they would be there in about 15 - 20 minutes. So, my friend and her father came back to my house with me to wait. Her father tried to open the door with a credit card but had no success. My friend and I went to the dining room window to watch N to see if there was a need to break a window to get back in. The first thing we saw was him crawling up on the piano bench and playing the piano. When he quickly tired of that, he set up his t-ball set and proceeded to play t-ball in the house. When I yelled through the window for him to set up his bowling set, he did and I believe he got a strike. Having, obviously, the attention span of a two-year old, he then dragged his rocking horse from the front room to the living room and rocked on that for approximately 20 seconds. He watched a little TV and came back to the window by me. He announced that he would be using the “potty” and headed off to the bathroom. (Now, I suppose I should mention that he is still in diapers and has never properly used the potty. He walks into the bathroom, stands in front of the toilet, lifts up his shirt, plays with his belly button (yes, his belly button), flushes the toilet, and puts the lid down. I imagine this was exactly what he did, but at this point, I could not see him from the window.) As he came back from the potty, my neighbor’s dad came back with a different, apparently sturdier, credit card and popped the lock open. (Kind of scary in itself. I have started using the deadbolt at all times.)

I immediately went in the house, checked on N who was doing just fine – perhaps even enjoying the freedom? – called the locksmith to cancel, and changed N’s diaper. Then, we had lunch.

Thank goodness that evening my husband came home from a week out of town for work. We had a great week, but Friday’s incident leads me to believe I was ready for some adult assistance.

Wish me luck this week ;).
