More armchair dream analysis here--aren't timers and clocks supposed to represent mothers? Because mothers are the regulators, of time and otherwise, of infants and children? I guess I also think of the ticking as related to hearbeat, like when you put a ticking clock into a puppy's bed to replicated its mother's heartbeat.
