Good luck with that! Technically, I don't think you have to have a passport even in deepest Mexico unless you don't have any other good ID such as your original Social Security card and a valid state driver's license (even a voter's registration card!). I have been to Mexico 4 times in the past 5 years, and NEVER have even had to pull out my driver's license. Unless things have changed recently.
