For anyone who's wondering, "The Zone" by Dr. Barry Sears is a diet philosophy based on balancing fat, protein, and carbohydrates in a 30/30/40 percentage mix (don't remember which one gets the 40%.)
I have used it and actually liked it once I got used to it. It works *very* well if you are suited to it metabolically but I do not believe everyone will be. Try it and see, I doubt if you can hurt yourself with it.
One caveat: I believe this diet will work well for a large percentage of *otherwise healthy* folk (healthy except for being overweight). In the presence of severe health problems it does not work nearly as well (severe as in my case, adrenal collapse.) I'm not saying it still wasn't a healthy way to eat -- it was -- I just lost the ability to lose weight on it, until I get adrenal and thyroid working again.
Dr. put me on Cortaz or something like that today -- it's late and I don't remember the name. Some cortisol supplement to make up for adrenal insufficiency. I look forward to the day when I can go back to the Zone, I really liked it. Right now I subsist on barely enough to keep a bird alive, in order to keep from dying of obesity (I'm not kidding.) My petite roommate eats about three times as much as I do and she has a slow metabolism. I stabilized my weight but by reducing food intake drastically (which in the long run is counterproductive, I know, but I have to live that long. My doctor is fully aware and working with me through this.)
Annnnyway, hope that helps. Good luck, beardy!! Let us know how it goes for you. In my experience, weight loss was painless and relatively quick -- I lost ten pounds of "winter weight" one spring without even noticing it, in about four weeks, on the Zone program.
