I can attest to what Phil has observed. The dot-com balloon did not merely pop in Austin: it was more like the Hindenburg. I know folks for whom job searching is their new full-time career, and has been for some time. Some have been at it for 1 1/2 years. One fellow had five jobs in two years before moving to California. Another told me he knew a programmer who is now bagging groceries at the local 'luxury' food store. Humility has become all the rage.
Curiously, many years ago the state laid me off (actually the whole division) circa Valentine's Day. Mayhap this is a Texas tradition I am unaware of....
