Nikki,
thanks so much for your thoughts today. It's funny how we were all so touched by this terrible event.
I remember when the towers were erected. I resented how the buildings changed the skyline. Over the years, I've mellowed as I saw them many times flying between DC and RI. That Tuesday morning, I passed the twin towers in an airplane at 8am. The sky was as blue as it gets in Arizona and the reflection or the sun was working its way up the towers with this beautiful golden pink, orange, yellow color. As we flew parallel to New York City, I thought I don't know why I resented those buildings so much. The sun's reflection off the windows was brilliant. By the time I retrieved my car in Ri and turned the radio on the first tower had been hit. I couldn't believe what I had just seen forty minutes ago. majestic and awesome with color had been plowed into by an airplane. By the time I had gone ten miles, the second towerr had been hit and by the time I arrived at work, I was listening to the news of the Pentagon hit. That sunlit building was all I pictured all day long and still do.
My husband often had business at the Pentagon and our children knew we had been in Washington Monday night. What they didn't know was whether their father had business at the Pentagon that day. Both of them tried to reach me but phone lines were really messed up. I finally got hold of one daughter in Texas. Because she worked on an Air Force base as a contractor, she was sent home from work where she found my phone message and called me at work. The daugher at college in Califronia was much harder to reach. I had no info about her schedule nor did I have her new phone number. I really was so stunned that day that it never occurred to me that I could email her to tell her that her father had flown home with me that morning and was himself driving to Connecticut listening to CDs not even knowing anything was happening.
Alot of my family are still in New York city and have their own tales to tell of high school students dismisssed from the scholl across the street. One son was located but no one knew where the second one was. He was so shook up he walked home and was located two hours later to his parents' relief. My cousin's husband's sister lost her husband that day leaving a 13year and 10 year boy and girl.
Today, I was talking to a kindergarten student as part of my job. She had this really pretty flag style shirt in the shape of a butterfly. I commented that I thought her shirt was quite lovely and she quietly answered, "My grandmother died in those buildings." There's not much to be said after that.
Because of my experiences and memories of September 11th, it really means something to me to read of someone's thoughts for my nation on this day. Thoughts and prayers are sincerely extended back to you. The UK lost quite a few good citizens too in that cowardly act of terrorism.
Bless you. You are absolutely right. Don't ever miss an opportunity to tell someone you love them. You might not get another chance.
And, once more, thanks.
