I don't do anything in particular for it other than take my Synthroid (I missed the -r- last time) & eat my normal pretty healthy diet.
There's various ideas on why someone develops Hashimoto's, not entirely agreed. It's thought to perhaps be an auto-immune reaction but I don't have any other related problems with auto-immunity or any allergies to anything either.
I do know that if you over-eat soy, yams, raw flax seed and/or vegetables in the brassica family (cabbage, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale), it can affect your thyroid function somewhat. They all have a certain amount of goitrogens in them which *MAY* affect thyroid functioning. But few of us overeat these vegetables. And it's thought that once you're stablized on hormone replacement, they won't cause problems if not overdoing them.I'm including 2 articles that may answer more for you. Not everything about low thyroid function will apply to all. Even though my thyroid was quite low, I wasn't cold, my skin wasn't dry or flakey, & I could still work with bursts of energy but I was very sleepy & tired, felt sluggish if I wasn't pushing myself, & was very foggy & moods went up & down like crazy.
