I'd kind of like to join CSA (got invited to) but it can be very time-consuming & expensive - all the costumes, the travelling to events & banquets. I hate committing myself to something I don't wish to do as intensely as they do.The drum circle was just a bunch of drummers sitting in a circle with hand percussion instruments (mostly djembes/dumbeks). My friend is an extremely talented percussionist and she led/provided the rhythms. She lent me a dumbek and I tried to keep up, but I kept getting distracted by the belly dancers. :)
Anyway, I think all it would take is a few people who have hand drums and a sense of rhythm. Having a talented person around is just icing on the cake.
These friends seem to be relatively casual members of CSA...they go to events about twice a year, hold occasional drum circles, sometimes attack the dummy in the back yard with a wooden sword (my friend's gf/wife/partner is a knight). I know there are lots of folks who get really really into it, but I think it's possible to participate at whatever level you want. They've also made some good friends through CSA.
This is starting to sound like a commercial. Note that I'm not a member myself and I don't sell silver jewelry or armor or medieval robes, so I'm not pushing membership. ;)
