Im a US citizen living in Toronto with my Canadian husband and American daughter and dual-citizen son. I take effexor in small doses. I have a long history of managable mental illness.
I consider myself a fairly healthy person, mentally, but I have lupus, some deteriorating condition in my uterus (biopsy in a week), and migraines.
I was a Marine wife and previously worked for a military aid agency.
Im not allowed to donate blood.
Im 500+ miles from my family.
I live in a building full of Muslims who are being persecuted.
I watched in horror as my president never even mentioned Canada's unequalled role in the days immediately after the attack. The thousands of people we housed and fed when they shut the skies down. The public mourning. The Canadian citizens singing the US national anthem.
I wept at the Consulate when I read:
"...land of the free and home of the brave...
...we stand on guard for thee..."I held my son in my arms and watched with pride when my daughter tried to explain to her friends what it meant to be an American and how she felt.
I am sleepless because I live in an apartment building and can see the airplane lights every night.
My husband is sleepless because he is worried about me.
I dont think its a mental illness to react to shocking and distressing events with shock and distress.
I also think whoever thought up that pole was an idiot.
