My funny thing didn't happen with my therapist but it relates. I was committed to a psychiatric
ward rather unceremoniously last summer. At the time I worked for a doctors' office, and though I had to call in to tell them where I was and that I didn't know when I would be back, I didn't figure that the details were any of their business. After a couple of weeks I returned to work and although everyone was very kind to me, I was still the subject of a lot of speculation and very strange looks, because everyone knew where I had been but nobody knew why (by that time my sense of humor had returned and I was keeping quiet on purpose, just to see if rumor turned me into an axe-wielding maniac).
On my first day back, a red pen leaked into the pocket of my white scrub shirt. I scrubbed the stain with hand soap several times but couldn't remove all of it. After lunch, I saw that the dried stain was still very obvious, so I took a bottle of White-Out (typing correction fluid)into one of the exam rooms and painted it over the red stain. I was in a very good mood and was humming "Penny Lane" while I painted my shirt with the
White-Out. It was a big stain and a tiny brush, so this took some time. Eventually I noticed that quite a few of my fellow employees had walked very slowly past the open door of the exam room, and it finally occurred to me that they thought I had completely lost it. I burst out laughing and said, "For God's sake you guys, I'm alright!" They all crowded into the room and shut the door and I explained everything.
People kill me.
