I too used to have panic attacks, due to anxiety. My anxiety was caused from childhood trauma, but like you I understand what it is like. And it is very scary. I've been in therapy (CBT) for almost a year. And you know what? I haven't had a single panic attack in quite a while. With this type of therapy, you learn different types of coping skills so that if you do have a panic attack you can refocus your breathing and relax (sounds impossible, doesn't it?). Just the other night I was in a situation where I would normally have a panic attack, yet I was able to remain calm and go to sleep. Also, there has been a significant reduction in my anxiety level.
It is hard to open up and talk to someone. But it isn't as hard as you think. And when you post here, it helps too.
