What I know about this is sketchy, and you could do a google search and probably find tons of articles. But what I know about object relations theory is that your early relationship with mother/caretaker is what you internalize and how you later see the world. Like if your needs were met quickly and kindly, you see the world as a good, non-threatening place and can trust others. If you had a depressed, non-responsive mother, you will see the world as not capable of meeting your needs or that you are not worthy of having your needs met, etc. The therapeutic relationship is supposed to be a "corrective emotional experience" where you can learn to let your guard down and see that it is okay, and there are people you can trust, and can change your view and your behaviors.
That's probably way over-simplified, but the best I can convey of what I understand.
