I've got some serious issues with my family as well. My dad has a foul temper and tho he has never hurt a flea in his life, he is always yelling, cursing, and threatening to kill someone or another.
My only (partial) solution is to put distance between us and draw boundaries. I'm afraid I have no better advice to offer.
