BTW China does have separation of state and religion. There are Christians practising openly in China:) even encouraged!
I suspect the Chinese govt doesn't look fondly on the types of religion that like to control the govt though!!
I guess you probably realise the French funded the US independence (it WAS a war against the Brits;-).. so the US are going to pay this debt back one day ??;-) The interest should be about...The separation of religion and state is way older than the French revolution.. which wasn't really about enforced religion?, more about the French funding the US war and almost bankrupting France doing it.. at least starving and overtaxing the peasants to raise money for the war! .. and all the "let em eat cake stuff" which was exaggerating to make a scapegoat
Their was Luther and all the other protestant groups before this( couple of centuries or so?).. but consider the Jews.. since before the birth of Jesus.. lived throughout Europe and most of the time were free to practise their own religion, and the wandering gypsies. But many more examples thru the world. I think the concept of separation of state and religion goes back a long way.
