Remenber Matthew Shepard? He was a gay college student beaten and left to die on a fence. Just for being gay.
Now, if that wasn't bad enough, there was a preacher, Fred Phelps who showed up at Matthew's funeral with signs saying "God Hates F*gs"
Now, if even that isn't bad enough, the same preacher is showing up at funerals of soldiers who died in Iraq. His new gig is "Thank God for IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices)"
His reasoning? God is punishing us for being tolerant of "f*gs."
These things *are* desparately important, because if we condone just the tiniest bit of discrimination (as in marriage) then where do we draw the line? If marriage is illegal, well then why not housing? And if housing is illegal, well then why not employment?
Where does it stop?
