In reply to Dr. Bob's not here so PBC. This is nuts!, posted by Phil on July 30, 2002, at 18:44:35
> Cam handled a blindside attack from lost boy well.
> Lost boy is angry at everything. He's more a danger to himself with that level of anger.
> If we're ever going to be able to actually exchange ideas and make friends here, we have to decide between taking an easy shot at someone or ignoring them.
> If you take a shot at them, someone takes a shot at you, third parties join in.
> I have been guilty, too. But 'before' you hit that submit button, think where it's going to lead and what it's going to do to this board.
> We all deal with a tough disease. EVERYONE OF US.
> Why do we fight with each other? We ought to be fighting for our rights, parity, better drugs.

> It is incredibly hard not to respond to a series of nasty posts but if you do...you know what's next.
> I'll give Dr. Bob another one PPR: Please Practice Restraint. Give it an hour before you post if you're not sure. There are many times I wish I would have.

> The bottom line is that everyone here says they want a safe place; that will take maturity and restraint. We want Dr. Bob back to block, etc. What are we? Helpless? If somebody makes you angry, do what Jesus said. Be nice to them; it's like pouring hot coals on their head. They're stumped. They have no where to go. Many come here just to provoke.

> The absolute worst thing for our collective diseases is ANGER. We have a choice.
> We can choose compassion or outright hatred.

> PhilThe above is incorrect. I am not angry at everything. Hardly. It might seem that way to people on this board, but Im actually a pretty nice guy who cares about people. I am actually a peacelover.
What I am angry about is shoddy, lack of specific psychiatric care. Im angry about how atypical anti-psychotic drugs are used sometimes with people who have depression and anxiety and not schizophrenia. Im angry that some family doctors are beginning to use low dose atypical anti-psychotics to replace benzos in anxiety patients who have absolutely no psychosis, because the doctor is afraid of getting the person hooked on benzos.
Im angry that my 86 year old grandmother, who weighs 92 lbs and cannot walk or get out of bed anymore was placed on 7.5 mg Zyprexa this past year for "dementia" and "behavioral problems" as the nursing home doctor put it. She couldnt hurt a fly physically. Sometimes she has verbal outbursts, but physically she cant even get out of bed. She has no history of mental illness whatsoever, much less any psychotic disorder. Thats enough Zyprexa to sedate a horse. Yeah, Im pissed about that and I dont agree with it.
Im specific when I speak. I dont go around saying schizophrenics or schizo-affectives should stop taking Seroquel...hardly...I think they need the stuff.
Oftentimes in society, the greatest social changes occur when people get angry and decide to do something about it. They go into politics, they write a book to voice their experiences and opinions on whats wrong with the system. They form political lobbying groups to foster changes they believe needs to occur. Anger can be a catalyst for change and its not always a bad thing, unlike how many mental health specialists would have you believe.
Without anger, there would have been no civil rights movement in the sixties. There would have been no psychiatry reform movement in the sixties and seventies. Many social changes have occurred because a small group of people could see things fundamentally wrong with certain aspects of the system and became angry about it and wanted to change it.
People who dont get angry are sheep. They are the passive codependents Ive complained about that habitate this board. Many successful people have anger problems and many times its the anger that motivates them to get things done (attorneys, politicians, corporate CEOs, etc). Many of them die young from cardiovascular disease as well. While it might not be pretty or fun for the people around an angry person, anger gets things done.
If you want change, you must get angry. At least a little bit.
