It's been abundantly clear for several decades sbd that benzos not only cause dependence, they can also be addictive. This has been confirmed by clinical studies and was easily predictable anyway since benzos can replace alcohol and barbiturates - and prevent withdrawal symptoms in people addicted to those drugs. It was long known that a drug capable of replacing another was very likely to share many of the same properties and this has proved to be the case with benzos.
Unfortunately honesty is one of the first causalities of addiction, with denial and self deception following closely behind.
