Ritalin activates intermediate early genes, cFOS, delta FosB, in the neucleus accumbens, just like do harder drugs like cocaine (ie so called addiction switch)
Some studies suggest that these genes remain activated long after the drug is discontinued.
So, when a kid treated with an ADHD med growing up becomes addicted to cocaine, is it the ADHD or the previously activated addiction genes?
