I feel so awful that you are going through this alone because I HAD to do the same thing. No family support.
You will go to the hospital and tell the triage nurse exactly all the symptoms you have been going through. I would make sure to mention any dissociation you have going on. She or he will ask you if you are suicidal and answer truthfully. Then you will go to where the beds are in the ER. A psychiatrist will come and talk to you and then leave to discuss you case with the psychiatrists on the ward. In the meantime, a social worker will probably come and talk to you. The psyhiatrist will come back and tell you what decision has been made. I would say that they will want to observe you for 48 hours. You go to the psych ward and have to wear silly pyjamas! You are not going to be locked anywhere. In fact they will want to see you deal in your environment. There are groups during the day but sometimes if someone is really not well, disociating or hallucinating you won't go to the groups. You will have some free time but you will probably have to talk to another psychiatrist.
I have to take myself a couple of time. And you know what? It's such a relief. It's like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. And you meet other patients who are usually really nice. Some people looked spaced out because they are on too many meds. Then there can be manic patients who talk a lot and are really busy all the time. The nurses are available to talk with if you need to.
Overall you will get all the support you need right now. AND you will find a med cocktail that will help you.
I hope you decide to go. I would go with you if I lived near you.
Hang in there okay? But the ER is the best place for you to go now.
Let us know what you decide.
