Why I'm not an entymologist...

Posted by Racer on June 20, 2005, at 18:33:14

I mean, besides the basic part about being allergic to most bug bites and stings...

Bugs freak me out. I'm a total and complete wimp about bugs. I get totally creeped out by bugs, especially if they fly. I can't stand being around flying bugs. Flying bugs are enough to keep me stuck inside. I won't go outside if there are flying bugs around that I can see. I don't like bugs that fly. Especially big ones. Especially big, black flying bugs that look like obese black bees. Or wasps. I don't like big, black, flying bugs that look obese black bees or wasps.

Why do I bring this up? Well, I was out on my balcony, sitting there, minding my own business, smoking a cigarette (yeah, well, I know...), and enjoying my comfortable place in the sun, near my new miniature roses. Suddenly, from out of nowhere, comes what looks like a huge, obese, black, flying bee! Sucker must have been nearly an inch and a half long, nearly spherical, and looked like a fat bee, or maybe a giant horsefly. (Ever been bitten by a deerfly? I get little welts, and it hurts enough that you know you've been bitten for an hour or so. Horsefly? Thank goodness we hardly have them around the barns out here!)

Maybe it was a giant horsefly. Those suckers have nasty biting parts, don't they? Ugh.

Now there's a wasp out there, hanging around the pineapple mint. I love the pineapple mint, but not the wasp.

And through it all? I'm having a nicotine fit, and the saddest part was me sitting right inside the door, watching my abandoned cigarette burn down to the nubs, while I sheltered from a nasty, ugly, enormous, black, flying insect that looked like an obese bee.
