I'm in exactly the same position. Absolutely terified I'll lose my job. For sure if I go on medical leave for depression, there will be no job for me to come back to. Everyone knows something is wrong with me. I spend many, many visits in the restroom crying silently and trying to pull myself together. But I have 2 young children to support, so I have to hold things together and keep working. I understand your fear. I understand your situation. I feel for you.

What if you took some medical leave time off and rested and worked on your depression wouldn't that help? You could probably say it was for something physical. With a doc to back you up. Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,
That's what I've been considering lately. I need the money though. My wife is on maternity leave for a year, so mine is the only income. Clubfitter, if there is any way you could get time off, I'm sure it would benefit you as it would me. I wish you the best.

I took personal leave once for depression, then came back to work and found that I wasn't ready for it at all. I decided to quit before I was asked to leave. That was almost 3 years ago, and I'm just now considering that I might be ready to go back to work - to be able to regain health care benefits. What an irony.
At the time that I left work, my pdoc did not think that I needed to do it. She and I disagreed on almost all aspects of my illness and treatment. She really wanted me to be a lot tougher and thicker skinned on all fronts, and discounted my therapist's assessment of PTSD. This probably hurt me as much as anything.Eventually I found another pdoc, and have had my diagnosis updated, medication changed appropriately, and my life has started to turn around. I don't think I could have done any of this and held a job - no, scratch that, I KNOW I could not have held a job and gone through the last couple of years. I had to put my mental health before everything else in order to start to recover.

I declined because I think it would be the end of my career. I'm taking emergency vacation time instead and saying that there is a personal emergency. I think people know that there's something wrong with me, but it hasn't been discussed. It's not a fun situation, and I have found it extremely difficult to hold myself together at work. I generally have to drive a few blocks away at lunch, and then at the end of the day, and break down for a long while before I can pull myself back together again. I think this hospitalization is badly needed.

> SonicOh, Sonic. I hope the hospitalization gives you the break you deserve. I'm with you as far as not wanting to divulge the reason for your absence. Even though your employer would be legally obligated not to change the status of your employment based on your medical leave, it would (in my mind and in my experience) create a new dynamic between you and your bosses that could be misunderstood, at best.
Take the vacation time. Give yourself this time to heal. If you need more time, by all means, by any means, extend your leave!! Don't go back until you're ready.
Good luck and I'll be thinking of you.

Hi clubfitter,
I had to sell one of my businesses, because with the depression, I could not handle both businesses and have any time for my family. This was the worst business decision I ever made. I rushed into it and sold it to my best technical employee. For some reason, I thought that because he was good technically, he could run a business. I did it all on credit and lost many millions of dollars. I had hard money offers but I had promised this guy that he could have it. He used to manage the employees by locking himself in his office and have the employees E-Mail him. In 1.5 years he had completely gutted a business that was grossing close to a million per year. I'm not sure there was not some fraud involved also. The moral of this gruesome tale, put off the major life decisions until you are at least thinking clearly. The mentally handicapped are protected in the housing market. I don't know about the work world.
Take care,
Jedi

yes and don't do it unless there is no other alternative. Once you leave a job due to mental disability it is very hard to return to your former job and there is a stigma attached to you by a society that still sees mental illness as a moral weakness in many cases.

Dear ClubFitter,
Your health has gotta be the most important thing. I know you need to earn a living, but you have to get healthy and look after yourself too. Do you have a safety net - family, friends who love you and will help you if you need to take some time off? I feel for you.

i work for a large company and we are aloud the FML (family medical leave act)...where you are allowed 12 weeks leave (paid or unpaid) leave for yourself or immediate family member for emergency leave. and promised that you will not loose your job. i guess maybe it depends where you live. but i'd check into this. you may not get paid for your leave but it can guarantee that you wont get fired. also if you fill out forms for the FML and it shows that you have a disability you may be covered by the ADA (american's with disabilities act).
HOWEVER, this all depends on how much you trust your boss as well. and what kind of job you have.best wishes to you...
it worked out for me to use this, i hope the same for you.
please take care of yourself.

Read my message on meds "Treatment Resistant Refractory Depression.
I had over 70 ECT (a normal course might be up to 10) and nothing positive to say about it.
I'd suggest using a MAOI like Parnate or Nardil before ECT as MAOI's are superior to ECT in my own option.
Brst wishes,
Jeff

I lost (3) jobs due to my depression. The last job was the hardest on me, brutal in fact. I had to sign this document that in not so many words stated that I was retarded. At that point I wouldn't even speak to my manager (a good family friend) for years over it. I went in on a Saturday with his boss to clear out my cube.
There were also short term and long term disabilities thrown in there when they seems to all be on MY side, but when they knew I wasn't getting better, they just ALL turned on me. Something I'll NEVER forget. I lost a lot of good friends that day.
This is the end of the thread.
