I strongly recommend that you read and take the Heather Ashton manual to your doctor:

And here is a specific schedule for Xanax 4mg (you would have to adjust slightly lower for 3mg, but your doc could figure this out given the 4mg schedule:

This is the most humane way to withdraw off a benzo IMO. Let me know if you have any questions, as I know the manual well. You may also want to post this on the withdrawal board, or Dr. Bob may redirect it pretty quickly... Good luck with stopping the Xanax, let me know if I can help!

My only worry is that my general practitioner who would likely be the one to help me do this seems to think that Valium is more addictive than Xanax. Is that a widely held belief by doctors? I guess I could always send her the link to the manual. She's very web savvy.

No, I would say the opposite is true. Xanax is about as addictive as the benzo's come. IMO, Valium is less addictive, and easier to discontinue. The Ashton strategy really is the best way out there to stop benzo's without suffering bad withdrawal effects. You will still feel some discomfort, but it will be less than trying to just taper the Xanax. It really does work well if you can convince your doc to let you try it. There is a good rationale behind it, so I don't see why a doc would disagree. Hope this helps!
