klonopin to lorazapam

Posted by crazyknitter on November 17, 2006, at 15:15:37

Hi, I was put on klonopin 1 mg. 3 times a day 3 weeks ago. I cut it down to .5 2 times a day and 1 mg at night last week. I had been on lorazapam for a few years before going on the klonopin. I don't like being on the klonopin at all, it makes me feel like a zombie. The psychiatrist told me I could switch back to the lorazapam, just stop using the klonopin. Is this ok to do? I am especially worried about nightime since the lorazapam is shorter acting, I don't want to have withdrawals on top of everything else. I have only been to the psychiatrist twice, so I'm still not real sure of him. Thanks for any input

Hi crazyknitter,

I've switched back and forth between Klonopin and lorazepam and other benzos many times myself and yes, this is OK to do. You will probably feel more alert after switching back to lorazepam. Nothing to worry about.

> Hi crazyknitter,
Thanks so much for the quick reply Q. I took the lorazapam this morning at 10am, at 3:15 I was having a panic attack, the first in a long time. I took another lorazapam and was ok for about 5 hours, by then was getting really anxious. I am taking 1 mg lorazapam to substitute for .50 of klonipin. Did you have anything like this happen or am I doing something wrong? For the first few hours I felt alot more like myself on the lorazapam. Not sure what to do for the rest of the week-end till I can talk to my doctor now that I've already started back on the lorazapam. Sorry to be so long winded.

Sorry for taking so long to reply crazyknitter, I forgot to activate email remiders for this thread. Since Klonopin has a longer half-life than lorazepam you may be experiencing anxiety breakthrough as your benzo levels fall between doses of the short-acting lorazepam. Klonopin is twice as potent as lorazepam, so the equivalent doses you are taking are correct.

You may feel better by going back to the Klonopin and taking a small amount at night and slowly reducing that dose while still continuing with your new lorazepam schedule. Are you taking 4mg lorazepam a day to equal the amount of Klonopin that you were taking before you went back to lorazepam?

Don't worry too much in any case as these problems are easy to solve by re-arranging your dosing schedule or perhaps considering a longer acting benzo.
