Stopping Abilify

Posted by syntheticsoul on January 1, 2006, at 18:05:31

Hi All,

I have been weaning myself off of my Abilify for about the past two weeks. My dose was 5mg daily, I have been taking now for about a year and a half. I am not sure what to expect in terms of side effects. Does anyone have any experience with this? I do not have Schizophrenia. Was using for treatment-resistant depression.

Thanks

I do not believe you will have any problems. I stopped Abilify cold-turkey without any noticeable effects.

I had a fairly serious treatment-resistant depression going for about a year and had to go on Abilify for it. Abilify helped, and I have been out of the hole for just over a year now and thinking that I don't probably need to stay on it. Should any symptoms creep back in I plan to go right back, but for now I would like to stop.

Tepiaca, in answer to your question, here's why I stoppd taking Abilify:

Several months ago, I faced an almost overwhelmingly large task that for me was as close to "do or die" as one can imagine. It was something that only I could do and could not hire or ask someone else to do it for me. It involved a legal proceeding and in short, if I did not complete certain paperwork within a set period of time (6 weeks) the rest of my life would have been financially ruined.

I had been somewhat fatigued and was having difficulty accomplishing very much. I was not certain if any of my meds were the cause. Because I was taking so many it was difficult to isolate the culprit.

I quit cold-turkey all suspected drugs: Trazadone(I was taking for sleeping), Cymbalta, and Abilify. I remained on Wellbutrin, Dexedrine, and Provigil. I also started taking Kava-kava to help me with sleeping instead of the Trazadone.

That was 3 months ago and I have not started taking them again. Alrthough I believe that I felt better emotionally when I was taking them, at least one of them was causing me to be overly fatigued. On many days, however, I wish that I had not stopped taking them, but on the other hand, I am extremely hesitant to start-up with any of them again.

I am schizophrenic and was on abilify for two years (30 mg's) during the second year I was put on geodon as well I have now stopped taking the abilify (about 6 weeks ago) and am taking only the geodon for my schizophrenia I have had some witdrawal symptoms perhaps because of the length of time for which I took it I know my reason for being on abilify is different from yours however I'd still like to share with you my symptoms of withdrawal which were irritability, insomnia, and moodiness the worst of these was irritability I am still struggling with it now after six weeks though it has subsided a great deal
