Risperdal withdrawal how long will it take?

Posted by 4wd on November 6, 2005, at 22:05:48

I've only been on .25mg for 10 days but I stopped it. The last pill was Friday night so the first dose I skipped was last night. All day today, Sunday, I've been scared to death, lots of anxiety and depression. Much worse than before I went on it.

Since I was on such a low dosage for such a short time, will this stop quickly?

Marsha

Yeah, your experience is what worries me about trying to get off of zyprexa...after 5 years, not just 10 days. Yikes. My doc wants me to switch over to seroquel, but ya know, I honestly don't know if I can do that. These antipsychotics, even in miniscule doses, are very powerful drugs, at least in my opinion. My doc says "but 2.5mg zyprexa is not even a therapeutic dose, you should be able to wash out of it in a week"...yeah right!

Actually, I bet the scaredness and anxiety and depression you are feeling will last about 2 to 4 days. 10 days was enough to start causing some changes in brain receptors, but they were just getting started, no big changes done yet.

Hi Blueberry,

You were right. I took the last one Friday night and this is Tuesday night and I'm feeling better. I've got some restless legs stuff going on and I felt ver scared this morning but I'm better tonight. I'm really glad I didn't stay on it longer. I can't imagine trying to get off it after years.

That's part of why I didn't want to take an AP in the first place. I've heard how hard it can be to get off them. But maybe the Zyprexa won't be so awful - it does have a long half life. I took it for a couple of wweeks and didn't experience any trouble stopping it. (I know that's nothing compared to how long you've been on it).

I don't think doctores understand how powerful these drugs are. My pdoc kept stressing how small a dose .25 of Risperdal was but it had a powerful effect on me.

Hi Marsha.

I'm sorry that Risperdal didn't work out for you. Back to the drawing board, I guess.

What other strategies did you and your doctor have in mind?

I got down to 1 mg. before I stopped taking my zoloft. You're right, these drugs are powerful. Your brain has to let go of the stuff - I figured it was something to do with the electric activity in the brain. It has to figure out how to do things without the drug. So, withdrawing to a ridiculously low dosage helps the brain get back on track. The restless leg feeling has gone away for me after 3 months. I didn't even realize it was gone.

My p-doc told me that it is safe to stop Risperdal cold turkey. That's what i did (from 0.75mg) and nothing bad happened.
