Is Effexor Withdrawal worse than LUVOX???

Posted by tizza on July 25, 2005, at 23:56:20

I recently switched to Effexor XR because Luvox stopped working for me. The 4 day washout period was hell on earth. Brain shivers, numb lips, arms and legs, vertigo, nausea, etc....I would not wish this upon anyone, my sister went through the same thing coming off luvox. We have both taken quite a few different ad's and found this was by far the worst. We are now both on effexor, any tips?????

I also forgot to mention that it has the shortest half life of all the SSRI'S maybe that's why the horrendous withdrawal's come on like lightning and knock you off your feet before you know what the hell has hit you. It starts within 24 hours and spirals out of control at a very rapid rate. Be wary of this drug, it did help me but now I don't know if it was really worth it. My sister and I both see different pdocs and ocasionally mention what medication each other is taking. I suffer from depression and generalised anxiety disorder and she suffers from post partem disorder. It's quite interesting how they seem to follow similar prescribing patterns.

I would think effexor is going to have even worse withdrawals than luvox because it has an even shorter half life.

Thanks raven! I know that effexor has a 4 hour half life and effexor xr has an 11 hour half life, which is the one I'm on but Luvox was only 9 hours. I want to come off them so maybe I should try something like Prozac which has the longest halflife of them all

Half-life is not the determinant as to how severe a withdrawal syndrome will be. It has more to do with what the drug actually does in the brain. That a drug has a short half-life means that you will have to dose more frequently to prevent withdrawal symptoms from appearing as you attempt to taper the dosage.
