Having a very bad day? Remeron troubles

Posted by Tom Twilight on June 5, 2005, at 2:03:15

Hey everyone

This probably belongs on the withdrawal board, but I know more people here, so this is were I’m going to post.

I’m currently on 30mgs of Remeron/Mirtazapine, it seems to be working for depression, but I think I’m gaining weight; also it doesn’t work for Social Anxiety.
I recently came of Effexor XL without much trouble, and since I was feeling pretty good I though I might come of Remeron as well and try and lose some weight.

Impulsively, and stupidly I just stoped my Remeron cold turkey last night.
I hadn’t heard of many people having trouble with Remeron withdrawals, so I though it would be easy.

I woke up this meaning feeling very anxious and panicky, horrible experience, I never normally feel like that in the morning.
15mgs of Remeron calmed me down a bit, but I’m still feeling very low.

I’m don’t know what’s wrong with me at the moment, I’m up and down like the Proverbial Yo-Yo

Don’t really know what I should do now
I could try weaning of Remeron, or I could go back up to 30mgs
I don’t know what to do : (

Has anyone had a similar experience?
Is it withdrawal, or just rebound anxiety?
Most importantly are there any drugs that help with Remeron withdrawal?

Hello Tom..like the new name :-)

I'm sorry that you're feeling down too..must be something in the air, the past few days i've been feeling pretty low myself.

I do have some experience with Mirtazapine, last autumn I was taking 30mg of this too. At first it felt pretty good, as in completely different from SSRI's. Also before I went on Mirtazapine, I was also on Effexor XL.

Anyway, I had a very similar experience to what appears to be you're going through now. The weightgain really started to bug me, then I started feeling very irritable and anxious. Also at night I remember having real bad restless legs. At that point, after about 4-5 weeks of being on it I realised how it was making me worse.

Don't mean to make this sound too depressing lol..but shortly after at my next visit to the psychiatrist is when my diagnosis was changed from depression to bipolar.. that was good bye anti-depressants for good.

>I’m don’t know what’s wrong with me at the moment, I’m up and down like the Proverbial Yo-Yo

Have you considered the possibity that you maybe bipolar? (hope you don't mind me asking)

Has there ever been times when you havent been on any meds..but you felt "really good" for like a period of afew months and then felt "really bad" after?

Thats what it was like for me, I mean my mania has never been full-blown, I've never been hospitalised or anything, classic hypomania really.

Hope you don't mind me asking those questions...

If there was a possiblity, then you could investigate mood stabilisers to see if they help?

Kind regards

Nick

Hi Tom,

>I hadn’t heard of many people having trouble with Remeron withdrawals, so I though it would be easy.

Some people do have withdrawal symptoms I'm afraid :-)

>I woke up this meaning feeling very anxious and panicky, horrible experience, I never normally feel like that in the morning.

I think you should probably go back up to the full dose. You could taper off it gradually if need be.

Kind regards,
Ed.

Thanks for your support Ed and Nick :)

Nick I'm not at all offended by your suggestion that I might be bipolar.
In our situation one has to consider all possibilities.

I don't 'think'I am because I don't really have manic periods, and antidepressants don't make me cycle.
However I will deffinetly give the possibility some serious thought!

In response to Ed's advice, I think I will go back to 30mgs or Mirtazapine.

I want to get of the Mirtazapine for two reasons.
Firstly as I said I'm gaining weight, and I already gained a lot from being on Clomipramine!

Secondly I want to start Phenelzine at some point (the sooner the better) because I need something that will help my Social Anxiety as well as depression.
Unfortunatly Phenelzine is 'Officially' contradicted with Mirtazapine, although apparently they can be safely combined.

I don't know if I could find a Pdoc in the UK who would agree to this combination however.....

Hi Tom!

>I think I will go back to 30mgs or Mirtazapine.

I think you will feel a large reduction in anxiety when you have done :-) I hope you have an easy taper :-)

Kind regards,
Ed.

Tom, I took l5mg of remeron for sleep along with valium. I stopped it after reading all the posts about wt gain. And I didn't think it was really helping me sleep. No side effects when I stopped, but I only took it for about a month. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Tom,

Thats good to hear you have never felt manic and don't cycle. There should be no reason then to suspect bipolar.

Hope things go well after you have mirtazapine out of your system

Kind regards

Nick

How long since you stopped the Effexor? Is it possible some of the rebound anxiety is from stopping the Effexor? Every time I came off Effexor I would start to get panicky within a couple or three weeks of the last dose (after tapering).

I am trying to get off remeron(zispen im in the uk). Been on it 2 yrs at 30mg, so far I have had 2 unsuccesful attempts to get off this drug. Both times I ended up with the worst ever insomnia and then depression. But I am in the process of trying to get off it again and thus far over a period of 6 weeks I am down to 15mg. I think I will be staying at this dose for another 3 weeks and then down to 7.5mg. You are not the only one who has trouble getting off this stuff, other people on this board have expereinced it. This time I have the shoulder of lamictal to lean on which I think may be helping in as far as depression goes, but the insomnia is here again.

But yeah remeron does suck to get off.(for me at least)

And yes I would also get rebound anxiety but this time the rebound anxiety has gradually gone with each decrease.

My advise is to take it VERY slow there is no rush.

After several months of this I finally went to a naturopathic doc and he gave me time release melatonin and also discovered I had pernicious anemia, which I am getting B-12 shots for. I've been Remeron free for 2 months now. I don't know if the Remeron caused the anemia, but I am suspicious. Remeron is a nasty drug that is hard to get off of. My suggestion - get off of it and stay off - with the help of a NMD. Good luck!
