getting off Prozac (after Effexor)- No picnic

Posted by canadiangirl3 on May 20, 2005, at 22:25:46

Hi all,
I was the one that heavily promoted the use of cross tapering efexor with 20mg of Prozac. It worked wonders for me getting off Effexor and I was feeling wonderful while on 20 mg of Prozac. First daily, than every other day, than every two days. Well, I've been off the Prozac now for about 10days and I am getting the intense brain zaps and full body electric buzzzzzzzs for the last few days. It seems to be getting worse. I have chewed off my lovely manicured nails and am overeating (with comfort food) trying to quell these effects. I am sorry to report this. I thought it would be easier b/c of Prozac's half life. I don't know how many more days it will take to get out of my system. I am also extremely irritable and have to watch my temper around my boss and boyfriend. Afraid of what i might say or do!!! any suggestions for natural remedies to help flush or cleanse the body?

I wrote to you along another thread. I really don't have any suggestions of how to completely avoid withdrawal symptoms, but some people have had success using Benadryl, an over-the-counter antihistamine with anticholinergic properties, to ease some of them.

Because of the long-life, you can continue your taper eg. every three days etc.

I forgot to ask:

How did you go about discontinuing Effexor and crossing-over to Prozac? How low a dosage of Effexor had you tapered down to before making the substitution?

I would echo Ed's suggestion about continuing to taper by skipping days. By continuing to post here, perhaps we can all put our brains together and come up with solutions.

Good luck.

Withdrawing from prozac can be hard, though not as hard as other meds. I feel it is smoother than withdrawing from other meds.

Here's a trick you can use. When you start getting withdrawals, empty a capsule of prozac into a glass of orange juice. Stir it up good. Drink just a portion of it, perhaps 1/4 or 1/2. Save the rest in the refrigerator for the next time withdrawals kick in. Each time, try to drink a little bit less than the time before.

This will provide almost instant relief to oncoming withdrawals, and lengthen the weening period so that the whole process ends up being a lot less painful.

Make sure and stir it real good each time before sipping because the prozac will settle to the bottom. The cocktail will stay good in the fridge for at least 10 days.

COOL!!!

Great idea.

Do you know whether the Prozac from the capsules actually dissolves in the orange juice or do you have to be sure to stir the mixture well before drinking it?

Hi,

It could work well. After all, Prozac can be taken as infrequently as once a week ie. 'Prozac Weekly' or whatever it's called.

Ed.

Hey Blu,
That is a really nifty idea. You're very creative! I know that Prozac also comes in liquid form probably for that exact type of use. As I said in an earlier thread, I am now at a cross roads as I am LOATHE to put Prozac back into my body as I feel like it would be going two steps back. A part of me, (the Aries), is just hoping this will be over in a few more days and I can tough it out....thoughts on that? Are you currently on that cocktail now?

This is the end of the thread.
