Redirected from Meds board:
> I've never posted before so I hope I'm on the right board--for withdrawal from prescription drugs. I'm a bit confused by the set-up.
> Anyway,4 months ago,I stopped a 5 year regimen of Zyprexa,10mg a day, with my Dr's consent and months of weaning down. I'd been stable for 5 years and am still on Lamectil,Klonopin, and Zoloft to control my bipolar disorder.
> The Zyprexa withdrawal symptoms were tough,-insomnia,nausea,strange reactions to light and sound, etc. So my Dr. temporarily prescribed Trazodone(100mg)before bedtime to help me sleep. Oh,it helped me sleep, all right. Like 12 hours, and then feeling like I could keel over all through the day,and then flu-like symptoms,-sore throat, swollen neck,etc.--I was convinced I had mono,or some other virus. My shrink convinced me that none of these symptoms could be side-effects of the Trazodone. I went to Ear,Nose, and Throat specialists, had bloodwork done, etc. Because I could not function,I had to quit my job.
> Yesterday my boyfriend came across a website,Medline, and it listed every ONE of my symptoms as common/not so common side effects of trazodone. Also not to be used by anyone who's had manic episodes.
> I'm very, very angry. I stopped the trazodone last night, after tapering for a month down to 12.5. Can I expect any horrible withdrawal effects?
> Thanks,

Okay, maybe someone can help me out here. How in the h*ll do I get to the current forum for Withdrawal? I'd like to view other threads besides my own. I'm totally confused.

Hi.

I'm sorry that you have had such a difficult time with these meds. Quit your job? That's a sad outcome from the unnecessary suffering you were subject to. I don't think you have anything to fear to discontinue the medication entirely at this point.

Would you mind describing in more detail what Zyprexa withdrawal symptoms you experienced before adding the trazodone?

Thanks.

Thanks Scott,
In answer to your question about Zyprexa withdrawal--keep in mind I was on 10mg for 5 years. The longer you're on a nueroleptic, the more severe your withdrawal will be. My previous psychiatrist had told me I would be on this drug the rest of my life--I switched psychiatrists after gaining 100lbs and reading about all the lawsuits. I "weaned" down over a 5 month period from 10 to 2.5--perhaps I should have taken even longer. The withdrawal was awful. I had bouts of sweating that would last for hours--even when it was 15 degrees outside. I could not sleep. I felt light-headed,nauseous,disoriented,photo-sensitive,anxious--then my Dr. prescribed the Trazodone. It's hard to tell now if I'm still going through Zyprexa withdrawal-my Dr. assures me that's over--or Trazodone withdrawal. Or if I'm just permanently damaged. I don't know. It's very scary. I quit smoking--a two pack a day 20 year habit, two years ago,and I thought this would be easy in comparison. Wrong!

It's me again.
I'm hoping now it's the trazodone withdrawal I'm going through, and not the Zyprexa after 4 months. I have insomnia, muscle tightness...last night I took 1mg Klonopin, low dose of Benadryl, and a tiny piece of melatonin to sleep. In total,I've had four hours of sleep. Back to bed!

It's now been almost 5 months since stopping Zyprexa. I'm still having trouble sleeping, even with the Klonopin(which I'm decreasing very slooooowly with the guidance of Scott(SLS). I also obsess constantly about having a manic episode, because of the drastic change in sleep.Last night I took a crumb for a placebo-type effect and it helped me to sleep. Even though at that dose it does nothing. This is a very difficult time for me,although I feel more like my old self, when I'm not worrying about a recurrence of mania, even though my Pdoc has assured me this will not happen. Anyone else have a problem withdrawing from neuroleptics(anti-psychotics-Depakote,Risperdal,Geodon,Seroquel,etc)?

I notice a lot of you have flu like symptoms while you are zyprexa withdrawing. I too am withwrawing, and in the last 2 weeks have been getting sick. Real sore throat. I don't get sick often. I've been withdrawing since December. And replaced it with geodon. Probably the worst part of the withdraw so far is the awakeness. Geodon is no where near as sedating. I took zyprexa 7-8 years. Now I'm on 2.5 mg zyprexa, down from 10.
