Tegretol/Trileptal Withdrawal Symptoms

Posted by ed_uk on April 5, 2005, at 1:04:43

Hi!

Has anyone had any withdrawal symptoms on stopping Tegretol or Trileptal? I know that withdrawal symptoms can occur... it's not something that's been discussed much on p-babble though.

Did you stop abruptly or taper?

Ed.

Aren't those anticonvulsants? If so, aren't you supposed to slowly wean off?

Try this site (he always shares how to taper off)

crazymeds.org

Hope that helps Ed.

Hi S!

>If so, aren't you supposed to slowly wean off?

Yes you are. I just wondered whether anyone on babble had had any personal experience of Tegretol withdrawal symptoms.

I would never recommend abrupt withdrawal of an anticonvulsant- the reason I asked is because some people do withdraw abruptly!!!

Ed.

I am also interested in this. Has anyone had withdrawal from trileptal, with a slow taper of course. I see that others have had problems with lamictal.

I have been off tegretol for 2 days now (from a 600 mg dose) and I feel very amped up, and am having difficulty sleeping. I would say yes... how long will this last?

Hi Joe!

Are you talking about tegretol or trileptal? I had tegretol for a few months and nothing happened in spite of an abrupt withdraw (I was not aware of such things then). Two years after that I was put on 600mg/day Trileptal, for supposed panic attacks (actually w/d symptoms from other medication) and then I had a big problem to quit. It took me about 6 months to completely wean off.

The hardest part was the final, when I reached a fragment of about 1/6 of the original 300mg pill. I was very anxious and simply could not sleep. But somehow I resisted and in a few weeks more things started to improve slowly. Probably the fact that I was taking mirtazapine too helped me to get back to sleep. But this is not a solution, because mirtazapine itself may have very severe w/d symptoms, including the lack of sleep.

Good luck!
Bob

I just switched from trileptal to tegretol (for trigeminal neuralgia) and had no wean off the trileptal. Within 36 hrs, my blood pressure shot up sky high (I don't have high blood pressure) and it continues to range anywhere from 160/100 to 200/100. I'm now on day 3 of the symptoms and getting through it day by day, but the blood pressure issue is concerning. The neurologist firmly denies any relation between the 2 events and states that I've developed high blood pressure. Sorry, but I think not. Seems way too coincidental to be 36 hrs into a total wash out and to suddenly develop high blood pressure.

I'm searching to find out more and can't find any information connecting the 2 events, but I know it to be true. In my body at least.

I don't know about the withdrawal from Trileptal, but starting Tegretol can do weird things with blood pressure on rare occasions. Try searching Medline.

I came off Trileptal 1200mg in one month and experienced tremendous effects within one weeks time. I was confused, disoriented, delusional, abnormal thinking, racing thoughts, and catatonic.

I am now trying to come off of it super slow. 6-8months. I come down one quarter of a 150mg a week and will be off completely by April 2007. I am currently at 488mg. I feel very depressed and tired all the time.

Hi

I am slowly coming off Tegretol Retard and am reducing by 200mg every three months. I went from 800mg to 600mg and am now on 400mg. I have been fine apart from some initial spaciness and a touch more anxiety. I can sleep ok, feel lighter but sometimes feel unnecessarily anxious in the pit of my stomach. I believe it's worth it and feel much better in general. My psychiatrist wants me completely off it in six months. I am on 800mg of Sulpiride and 400mg of Lamotrigine so this probably helps too. Since I have Bipolar 2 I need it though.

Good luck
