One morning we ran out of catfood. I took some bowls, poured some milk into them and set it down in their usual place. Two of them didn't touch it. They both looked at me like...is THIS what he usually have for breakfast? No it is not. Take it away at once!
Dogs meanwhile will usually eat anything they're offered and then some. One pitbull year-old we had for a while ate a whole bottle of Gorilla Glue he found in the garage and seemed quite satisfied with it.

Frankly, in keeping with your comment, they miss the cat, too. Well, they miss the cat's box....
Was your pit bull alright after the Gorilla Glue?
I have a spaniel who has no food sense whatsoever, and boy, I worry about her....

Yeah he was ok. I saw him the other day and he's huge. When he had him he managed to bite every single thing we had in the garage. I though he was a goner after the glue though...
I never heard that term - food sense. Is that something you can train?

I have reduced her 'trash mouth' a bit by more constant attention (she's a bit high strung and needs love) and giving her lots of good things to chew, like real bones. And a trace supplement called 'Missing Link'. But she'll never be trustworthy. She'd lap up antifreeze given a chance.
Someone else with better dog skills might know. There are a number of skillful dog lovers here.
You foster animals?

We don't really foster but everyone in my family loves animals and has a real soft spot for them. If someone offers an animal we usually take it. We had this pitbull for like two weeks. The owner didn't want it and wasn't treating it well: he kept him chained up all day and wasn't feeding it right or looking after it. But this guy was 100% pitbull - he had yellow eyes and was big and looked scary like a lion. Now my aunt is scared to death of pitbulls. He wasn't like our pit-lab who was very loving and gentle. He barked at the cats and bit into everything he could get his paws on. But the real deal-breaker was that our pit-lab couldn't deal with another dog. She stopped eating and just generally was really upset. Sometimes he would bark at me - you know like challenging the pack leader - and SHE'd basically put him in his place. Then one day he started barking at my aunt as she got out of the car and that was pretty much it.
I miss him though :( He was fierce but so goofy and had a good heart. But our other dog made it pretty clear that we're a one-dog family.

This experienced dog lover says that the best way to avoid tragedy is to dog proof your house.
There's a rule at our house that nothing is to be taken off even the lowest piece of furniture in the house. While I wouldn't trust them with food on the coffee table, nonfood items are generally off limits if they are there.
If it falls on the floor, the dogs aren't in trouble for eating it. If it falls on the floor and is destroyed, the human takes responsibility for it.
So we scan the environment for chewable items as if we had a two year old. Prevention is the best training in this case. Although I have seen people who have trained their dogs not to take anything without express approval. I'm impressed, but make no real effort to achieve this goal. :)
They generally do outgrow it. Usually. Though antifreeze will always smell like a tasty treat.

Neighbor got a German Shephard pup he climbs on the beds and eats socks. The vet said give hydrogen peroxide with water and the dog vomits them. Last time ate six and needed surgery. So big dogs are really hard. Phillipa
